Riding on the tails of Miguel's thread...

Can anyone identify this? I got it out of a mystery crate of wood by the pound at a Cleveland area Woodcraft.

Very hard and resonant, not oily and smells almost like red hots (cinnamon candy).

I realize the picture looks sort of like Padauk but it's not, unless it's Andaman Padauk which I've never had.

Any ideas?

Kevin, that is machiche. Definitely, no doubt about it. 100% positive, it's machiche.

Wow, I was going to guess machiche but the smell threw me off. It doesn't smell like cinnamon to me, the smell is hard to describe but it is distinct and pleasant to me. I can't believe I actually came close on one of these.

I didn't even have a chance to be completely wrong. Again. Maybe that's good! Didn't get any slivers from scratching my head. :)

Thanks folks.

I looked up Machiche & that definitely looks like it.

I'm not surprised to see that it's being used as a tonewood. The stuff is very stiff & resonant.
